Background & objectives: Pink salt and monosodium glutamate (MSG) are two typical food additives used in cooking to enhance flavour. However, excessive use of them has been associated to a variety of metabolic problems, including weight gain and hyperglycemia. The current study aimed to assess the metabolic changes caused by submaximal dosages of MSG and pink salt in experimental rats. Methods: Twenty-four 120-150 g Wister rats of both sexes were divided into three groups: control, pink salt-treated (0.8 g/kg daily for three weeks), and MSG-treated (3.6 g/kg daily for three weeks). The body weight, amount of food and water consumed, and blood glucose levels of animals were measured and recorded as indicators of their metabolic changes. Furthermore, after salt treatments at intervals such as week 1, week 2, and week 3, the survival rate and general toxicity manifestations were determined. The results were statistically analysed using one-way ANOVA, with p < 0.05 being considered significant. Results: The study found that the group given a submaximal dose of MSG gained significantly more weight (p < 0.05), consumed more food and water, and had higher blood glucose levels than the control. Ninety percent of the MSG therapy group survived by the end of the third week, however, they suffered from negative effects like abdominal distention, respiratory problems, ptosis, and subcutaneous swelling. On the other hand, the consumption of food and drink was significantly (p < 0.05) increased upon the administration of pink salt. Only little changes were observed in the body weight, blood sugar levels, and general features (such as subcutaneous swelling, change in bowel colour, and loose stools). Additionally, it was shown that the survival rate remained unchanged, particularly after week 3. Conclusion: According to study findings, MSG may induce metabolic issues, increasing the chance of death. While there was no discernible metabolic aberration linked to pink salt. Further research is required to fully understand the mechanism and consequences of these taste enhancers on the host system before pink salt can be deemed safe.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare types of veneer preparations and their combination with three materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two finite element models were specially prepared used representing window and wrap around preparation for veneers. The "central incisor" tooth geometry was acquired using a laser scanner, and then its surface was adjusted to form a solid model prior to the removal of each preparation separately. Three materials (Lava Ultimate, IPS e-max, and Celtra) were tested in combination with the preparation type. Bone geometry was simplified as two coaxial cylinders in all models. Each model was subjected to two loading conditions of occlusion (edge-to-edge bite and normal bite). STATISTICAL ANALYSIS AND RESULTS: It was observed that cortical, cancellous bone, and periodontal ligament are insensitive to preparation or materials. Their stresses and deformation were within physiological limits. Significant changes appeared on the central incisor tooth structure, cement layer, and veneer layer stresses and deformations under loading cases. CONCLUSIONS: Edge-to-edge bite stresses are severe with window-type preparation, and normal bite did not show any critical values on tooth structure, cement layer, or veneer layer. Veneer layer finish line and its contact with the cement layer and tooth structure play a role in the loading transfer mechanism. Preparation type alters the values of stresses on tooth structure, cement, and veneer layers. With window preparation, extreme stresses appear at finish line, while stresses appear under the loading site with wrap around preparation. Veneer and cement layers withstand the load energy with wrap around preparation and reduce tooth structure stresses. Thus, the lifetime of veneer and cement layers might be longer with window preparation.

Aim Patients' perspectives on their condition and treatment, their sense of need for healthcare, and their preferences for care and outcomes are all addressed by quality of life metrics. Therefore, it is important to all health professionals and patients involved in orthopedic surgery. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of life after orthopedic procedures and how its results could potentially be used for future improvement. Methods This is a cross-sectional study conducted among patients who underwent orthopedic procedures at Buraydah Central Hospital (BCH) and King Fahad Specialist Hospital (KFSH). A self-administered questionnaire was distributed among the patients using a paper questionnaire. The questionnaire was composed of socio-demographic data (e.g. age, gender, education, etc.) and the 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36) to measure patients' quality of life. Results In this study, 215 patients were able to complete the survey (male 82.3% vs female 17.7%). The most common age group was 18 to 30 years old (30.2%) and the most common surgery performed on patients was thigh surgery (19.5%) and hand surgery (13%). The overall mean physical health score after the surgery was 51.1 (SD 11.8) higher than the mental health score (mean 47.7; SD 11.2). Poor quality of life was significantly more common among patients with chronic disease while poor physical functioning and general health subdomains were more associated among patients who underwent hand surgery. Conclusion Patients suffering from chronic diseases tend to exhibit a low quality of life as compared to other patients. The quality of life after the surgery is an important indicator of patient satisfaction which may have a direct impact on the future outlook of a patient. More research is needed to determine the overall quality of life in patients who underwent a surgical procedure in our region.

Background Preoperative anxiety is a frequent and challenging problem that may impact a patient's postoperative pain and satisfaction. The level of a patient's anxiety needs to be assessed through a valid and reliable instrument to prevent and treat preoperative anxiety effectively. One such reliable measurement scale is Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and information scale, which is based on a self-reported questionnaire but is still not validated in Arabic. Objective To validate the Arabic Version of the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) for assessing preoperative anxiety in the Arabic population. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted to translate and evaluate the validity of the APAIS in the Arabic version. The targeted population was Saudi adults undergoing surgery at the King Fahad Hospital in the Qassim region of Saudi Arabia. One hundred hospital patients were recruited and given the APAIS questionnaire to collect the data. The ethical considerations have been appropriately followed to protect the privacy of the patient's history. The collected data was qualitative and quantitative, which were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Results The questionnaire showed high internal consistency on the anxiety scale (Cronbach's alpha: 0.851) and a strong correlation between age, chronic diseases, and surgery. While Cronbach's alpha for the information scale is 0.827. The gold standard curve between the worried and afraid two variables showed good efficiency during the configuration. In addition, the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) model of the Arabic version is a two-factor model to evaluate the validity of the Arabic version. Conclusion The Arabic Version of the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and information scale (APAIS) is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing preoperative anxiety. Using this validated scale for Arabic patients is feasible and shows promising results.

Density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations were carried out to explore the electronic and optical properties of double ordered Ba2NaReO6, Ba2LiReO6, and Sr2LiReO6 perovskites by employing the state-of-the-art exchange-correlation potential, i.e., Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson for the electronic system. The calculated electronic band structures show an indirect band gap along with a semiconductor nature. Total and partial densities of state peaks were analyzed in light of effective contributions of various electronic states. The significant optical parameters, including the components of dielectric constant, the energy loss function, the absorption coefficient, the reflectivity spectra, the refractive index, and the extinction coefficient, were computed and discussed in details for radiation up to 14 eV. Finally, we studied the inter-band contributions from the optical characteristics. Our present study might be considered as first theoretical quantitative calculations of the optical and electronic behavior in the cubic phase of double perovskite materials based on rhenium.

We performed ab initio calculations to study the structural and optoelectronic properties of simple and slab phase TaNO using density functional theory (DFT), in which the full potential augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method was implemented using the computational code Wien 2k. The modified Becke-Johnson potential (mBJ-GGA) was used for these calculations. The calculated band structure and electronic properties revealed an indirect bandgap for simple TaNO (3.2 eV) and a direct bandgap for slab TaNO (1.5 eV). The interband electronic transitions were investigated from the band structure, and transition peaks were observed from the imaginary part of the dielectric function. These transitions are due to Ta-p, N-p and O-p orbitals for simple TaNO and Ta-p, N-s as well as O-p orbitals for slab TaNO. The plasmon energy was related to the main peak of the energy loss function, which was approximately 10 eV. The static value of the dielectric constant and the refraction were close to the experimental values. In general, slab TaNO shows different properties and is more suitable for optoelectronic applications due to direct bandgap.

Have one ever seen a semiconductor that can issue two-color lasing lines? The diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) can do this. Here, we have observed dual lasing lines of 530 nm and 789 nm from a DMS structure of CdS:NiI, in which the excitonic magnetic polaron (EMP) and localized excitonic magnetic polaron (LEMP) are excitations out of ferromagnetic (NiS) x nanocluster and NiI2 nanoclusters within CdS lattice; both of them could lead to the collective EMP state at high excitation and therein produce coherent emission lines simultaneously. This occurrence is due to the superposition of EMP near CdS bandedge and the combination of the charge-transfer band of (NiI) n cluster with the LEMP within CdS lattice by overcoming the strong electron correlation of NiI cluster in a DMS structure, evidenced also by ab initio calculation. This finding opens a way to understand the collective behaviour of spin-coupled excitons in DMS and to find novel applications in the spin-related quantum technology.

Palm pits are used in various human and animal feed products. In this study, the natural radioactivity levels from soil and date palm pits of 9 samples collected from major date palm farms in three different regions (Buraidah, Al-Zulfi and Al-Majmaah) of Saudi Arabia were determined by using the high purity germanium (HPGe) gamma-ray spectrometer. The mean activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, 137Cs and 40K in soil samples were 12.8 ± 2.2, 10.2 ± 2.1, 0.28 ± 0.10 and 329 ± 87 Bg kg-1, respectively. Similarly the mean activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K in date palm pits were 5.6 ± 1.2, 2.8 ± 0.4 and 181 ± 17 Bq kg-1, respectively, whereas 137Cs could not be detected. The geometric mean of TF values (geometric standard deviation in parentheses) of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K were 0.33 (2.1), 0.22 (1.8) and 0.51 (2.0), respectively.
